Giants vs. Cowboys pregame thoughts from Dan Duggan

My pregame thoughts on the Giants’ offense:

1.) Daniel Jones better get a good stretch. The Giants are going to need his legs. The Giants didn’t run a lot of zone-read in the first meeting, but expect that to change today. Also, I figure they’ll move the pocket as much as possible on pass plays.

2.) The Giants need Saquon Barkley to carry them. That’s asking a lot considering his workload already. He needs to find some of that early-season juice. He has seven carries of 20+ yards, and only two in the past five games. Can he get more involved in the passing game?

3.) The offense has been vanilla lately. If there are any trick plays on the shelf, it’s time to break them out. Throw out some funky formations, whatever. (To the earlier point, the short week makes this tougher.)

4.) Obviously, there’s no good time to be this beat up on the O-line, but it’s hard to think of a worse matchup. Not only do the Cowboys have talented pass rushers, but they also use stunts/twists more than any defense. That will test the communication of a group with limited experience together.

The Cowboys best offense: Dak Prescott near perfect and Tony Pollard dynamic

It is a short week and therefore we must join the Cowboys in turning the page to the Giants sooner rather than later. That said, if you think I am going to let one of the best performances in my time covering the Cowboys go that quickly, then you don’t know how I have rolled for 25 seasons around here.

Sunday was an offensive masterpiece and one that felt like it happened without real urgency. What I mean by that is once it was clear that Minnesota had sort of packed up its stuff and was ready to leave — moments inside the two-minute warning of the first half when Tony Pollard scored his first touchdown to give Dallas a 20-3 advantage—there was no reason for the Cowboys to feel the need to do a whole lot. And yet, they continued to accomplish impressive things on both sides of the ball.

Anytime you roll up your most yardage of the season and allow the least yardage of the season to your opponent, you have to take a moment and savor it.

How to look at the Lions’ loss

Shootout games (contests where each team scores 24+ points) are typically a 50-50 proposition, even for powerhouse offenses. That made this a solid approach for the Lions today, but with Detroit now 2-5 in shootouts and 2-2 in non-shootouts in 2022, it’s likely that the Lions need to go another route if they want to turn the corner.

Playoff picture perspective

A five-win Lions team would have been a threat to the Wild Card, so Detroit’s loss today was big for the Giants. The Lions are now 4-7. The Bills improve to 8-3.

Final: Bills beat Lions in Thanksgiving thriller

Detroit has a reputation for finding a way to lose close games and that trait came up again when the Lions allowed a 36-yard pass to Stefon Diggs that set up a game-winning 45-yard field goal by Tyler Bass to give the Bills a hard-fought 28-25 win.

Numbers behind Tyler Bass’ miss

Before that miss, Bills kicker Tyler Bass had made 105 consecutive PAT attempts.

His last PAT miss came in Week 13 of 2020 against the Steelers.

Bass was the only kicker with at least 25 PAT attempts over the past two seasons without a miss.

Three-point game: Bills score, miss extra point

Jim Nantz didn’t jinx the kicker on this one, but Tyler Bass missed the PAT on the Stefon Diggs touchdown catch, so Buffalo only has a three-point lead with 2:40 left in the fourth quarter.

AFC East, NFC East off to unprecedented starts

Every team in both the AFC East (Bills, Dolphins, Patriots and Jets) and the NFC East (Eagles, Cowboys, Giants and Commanders) have winning records entering Week 12.

Per the NFL, there had only been one instance of a division having all four teams above .500 this late into a season in the first 20 years of the current divisional alignment: 2014 AFC North.

Lions take the lead

No one doubts that a Dan Campbell team is going to fight for four quarters and that has been the case today, as a 41-yard punt return by Kalif Raymond set the Lions up for a 35-yard touchdown drive that was capped by a DJ Chark scoring pass from Jared Goff. Add in a successful two-point conversion run by D’Andre Swift and Detroit is up 22-19 with 13:47 left in the fourth quarter.

Bills leads as third quarter winds down; Jim Nantz owes Lions fans

Lions kicker Michael Badgley just missed a 29-yard FG attempt, and Jim Nantz owes Lions fans three points. Nantz said he didn’t want to hear about the announcer’s jinx because Badgley hadn’t missed a kick all year. Badgley then missed the field goal by a wide margin.

The score remains 19-14, Bills leading, with 1:57 left in the third quarter.
