The Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Marquette Golden Eagles meet in college basketball action from Suncoast Credit Union Arena on Monday night.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs will look to build on their unbeaten record after a 79-42 win over South Dakota in their last matchup. Tolu Smith leads the Bulldogs in scoring and rebounding with 17.8 PPG and 8.5 RPG while DJ Jeffries has 11 PPG with 5.5 RPG as the only other double-digit scorer for Mississippi State up to this point in the year. Cameron Matthews has 8.3 PPG with.5 RPG while also leading Mississippi State in assists with 2.5 APG. As a team, Mississippi State is averaging 73.8 PPG on 47.2% shooting from the field, 30% from three and 63% from the foul line this season.

The Marquette Golden Eagles will look to build on their 95-58 win over LIU in their last game. Olivier-Maxence Prosper leads the Golden Eagles in scoring with 15.3 PPG and 4.3 RPG while David Joplin has 15 PPG with 5.5 RPG. Oso Ighodaro has 12.5 PPG with 5.8 RPG and 3.8 APG and Kam Jones has 11.3 PPG with 5.3 RPG to cap off the scoring in double figures for Marquette up to this point in the year. Tyler Kolek also has 7 PPG with team-highs of 5.8 RPG and 9.8 APG this season. As a team, Marquette is averaging 85.3 PPG on 46.4% shooting from the field, 31.5% from three and 69.6% from the foul line this season.

Mississippi State is 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Monday games while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. Marquette is 10-2 ATS in their last 12 games following an ATS win and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600 while the under is 7-2-1 in their last 10 games following an ATS win.

I get the reasoning for backing either side in this game, but I’m on Marquette here. I’m just not 100% sold on Mississippi State yet, and if they can get a win here, I’ll buy into the Bulldogs. However, Shaka Smart’s got this Marquette group playing solid defense again, reminiscent of the VCU Shaka Smart defenses and I think that’s going to be an issue for Mississippi State here. Give me Marquette and the points in a game I think Marquette could win outright.
