Kickoff time set for Michigan vs. illinois football game

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Michigan football team will host Illinois for a noon kickoff at the Big House next Saturday, Nov. 19, the Big Ten revealed early Sunday morning. The Wolverines will celebrate Senior Day ahead of the contest, which is the final home game of the 2022 season and will be broadcast nationally on ABC.

After starting the season with a 7-1 record, the Illini have lost their last two games — both at home. They fell at Michigan State, 23-15, before a seven-point defeat at the hands of Purdue, jeopardizing a chance at their first Big Ten West title.

And during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s loss to the Boilermakers, star running back Chase Brown left with an apparent right leg injury. Brown entered the weekend as college football’s leading rusher (1,344 yards). The program hasn’t released details about Brown’s status, but even if he can play against Michigan, the Illini will face a stiff test in Michigan and its elite rushing defense.

The Wolverines are 10-0, the best start under Jim Harbaugh and the program’s best start since 2006. They have won 14 consecutive home games, the longest active streak in the Big Ten. And over the last five games, Michigan is out-scoring opponents, 117-3, in the second half.

This week, No. 3 Michigan took care of business against Nebraska, grinding out a 34-3 victory at the Big House following the 3:30 pm kickoff.

Against the ‘Huskers, Michigan rushed the ball 49 times for 264 yards. Candidate Heisman Blake Corum carried the rock 28 times for 162 yards and a touchdown. QB JJ McCarthy added a three-yard rush TD of his own, complementing his 129 passing yards with two touchdowns. The UM defense, facing third-string QB Logan Smothers for much of the day, forced seven punts and allowed just 146 yards.

“Today was a day we thing to go more on the ground. George Patton would be proud,” Jim Harbaugh said after the game.

UM has played six of its 10 games this season at noon. The program was a fixture on “Big Noon Kickoff” earlier this year but has kicked off its last three games later in the day, including a pair of night games against Michigan State and Rutgers.

On Nov. 26, the Wolverines will again play at noon in The Game — a battle for a Big Ten East title and Big Ten Championship berth against Ohio State in Columbus. That game will air on FOX.
